4-H Cherokee County Outdoorsmen
(Formerly known as 4-H SESS)
New Name and New Members
L to R: Ally, Annalie, and Andrew our "A-Team"
4-H Safety Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) has decided on a new name that better describes what it is in our 4-H world. We are like any other 4-H club with all the same interests and project areas as the other clubs in Cherokee. The advantage we have, is the ability to explore beyond the usual livestock, sewing, crafts, and baking commonly seen at the Cherokee County Fair.
We are the only club allowed and able to offer the shooting sports project areas in addition to the other common project areas. We currently offer and focus on archery, however, rifle shooting will be offered later this spring or early summer once our new rifle instructor receives his 4-H SESS training in April. Eventually, we would like to expand into shotgun and muzzleloading shooting, when someone who is excited to teach about these areas is willing to get the training necessary to teach us.
Our other areas of focus are on outdoor and wildlife activities. We have plans for some hiking, camping, and other activities and projects related to the outdoors. For example, we had one meeting where Laura Kohn, the Cherokee County Naturalist, met with us to teach us about animal tracks and we made animal track booklets. At another meeting we put together individual first aid kits for hiking, as well as a club first aid kit. Even more recently, members participated in an indoor 3-D archery tournament in Denison, Iowa. So we are active and moving.
Our meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month from 1-3 p.m. at the Full Draw Archery Club indoor range unless other events or activities take us elsewhere. Our club coordinator is Nancy Nelson (712) 225-2650 and the archery instructor is Barry Nelson.
Our members and officers are as follows:
Annalie N. (President)
Anna B. (Vice President)
Ally B. (Secretary/Treasurer)
Andrew B. (Safety Officer)
Brian N.
Benjamin N.
Evan A.
